Australia Grants Rs 4 Million for Rural Development
The Australian High Commissioner, Ms Kathy Klugman, on 16 March, handed over cheques worth approximately Rs 4 million to five small scale development projects in different parts of the Island.
The projects were awarded funding under the Direct Aid Program (DAP), which aims to provide grass root level assistance to needy communities throughout Sri Lanka. DAP projects are designed to provide immediate benefits to the recipients who are fully involved in the identification, design and management of the project activities. In the past DAP has assisted widows, children, the disabled, the elderly, rural poor among others.
Speaking at the occasion, the High Commissioner said: “We take great pride in the Direct Aid Program as the projects help in achieving tangible results which have long term benefits. Those who benefit from DAP support are not only the direct beneficiaries of the grant, but the community at large”
In this round, funds were presented to Child Vision in Puttalam for its work for the disabled and its promotion of an inclusive society; PEACE in Colombo for protection of vulnerable children; Total Development Foundation in Hambanthota for a project assisting tsunami affected widows develop livelihoods; Sabaragamuwa Community Development Foundation in Balangoda for a project to support low income families to overcome the debt cycle; and Lower Uva Development Centre in Bibile for income generation/home gardening project.
